L4 Evolution: Pattern and Process

These Web pages provide some resources for the Level 4 Honours Option "Evolution: Pattern and Process."

Evolutionary biology is at the core of modern biology. This course aims to provide you with an overview of key conceptual and empirical issues in evolutionary biology. The course combines pattern-oriented approaches, such as phylogenetics, with process-oriented developments in population genetics, developmental biology, and molecular ecology. The course will focus on some current "hot topics," and will also seek to show the relevance of evolutionary theory to other aspects of biology. You will also gain practical experience of a range of computer programs used to test evolutionary hypotheses. The course is taught as a mixture of lectures, laboratory and computer practicals, and discussions. Some sessions may require you to undertake a small assignment prior to the next session. Where any session requires preparatory reading, it is important that this is done beforehand. Otherwise you will find it difficult to understand the concepts discussed and impossible to contribute in any meaningful way to the discussions.

By the end of the course you should be able to:
